PLANET OF THE APES DAY Episode

In our special podcast celebrating the first PLANET OF THE APES DAY, comedian and lifelong APES movie fan Dana Gould joins Frank, Jack, Trish and Scott to discuss the entertainment legacy and personal connections to the entire APES franchise, including the new generation of films RISE and DAWN. In short, the Damn Dirty Geeks GO APE at last!

Our podcast primates evaluate the evolution of the classic APES films, including the importance of Charlton Heston and Roddy McDowall in the series, and how the newer films’ blend of actors and CG have changed the future of the franchise.

Collectively, we also link specific and fond memories of our first time seeing the APES films, and note how Taylor’s mysterious leap into the far future influenced our lives as fans, professionals and Damn Dirty Geeks, of course.

Trivia: Reportedly actress Ingrid Bergman refused the part of Zira and later regretted her choice both for the final film’s ultimate quality and for missing out on the chance to work with Charlton Heston.

Trivia: Planet of the Apes novelist Pierre Boulle wrote a sequel script entitled PLANET OF THE MEN, which featured Taylor leading revolt against the apes fourteen years after events in PLANET OF THE APES.

Trivia: As discussed in our episode, CONQUEST’s original ending was much darker, concluding with Caesar’s speech and the gorilla’s beating Governor Breck to death on the plaza steps. Test audiences reacted negatively to such harsh violence, examples of which were cut throughout the film, and Roddy McDowall recorded a new speech urging the apes to lower their weapons and prove that apes, while not human, can be humane. This speech was inserted over repurposed shots of McDowall but cropped closer showing Caesar’s eyes but not his mouth so the new dialogue could be added to these original shots. Even with these editorial changes, CONQUEST received a PG rating by the MPAA, the only entry in the APES franchise not to earn a G rating. The violent alternate scenes are available for viewing in the unrated edition of the film available on Blu-ray and DVD at Amazon.com.
